HF Propagation

Once again, the SFTARC is planning an operating event from the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City, KS. This year we are planning on a Saturday, April 18th, POTA (Parks on the Air) activation with two HF SSB stations and one CW station.

The core team will meet in Gardner at about 5:50 am and then convoy down to the Tallgrass, stopping at BETO Junction (Hwy 75 and I-35) for breakfast. Those who wish to travel individually could meet the rest of the SFTARC team at BETO or at the Tallgrass on their own schedule. The goal is to arrive at the Tallgrass by 9 am and have at least one station on the air by 10 am. Members take turns operating the stations and logging contacts, with everyone participating in the setup and the take down of the stations.  We are usually taking down the stations between 2 and 3 pm, returning to the Olathe area generally before 6 pm.

These Tallgrass operations have been enjoyable events for the club.  The National Park Service has been delighted to host us, and we often get curious questions from park visitors--making the event good PR for amateur radio.  And while you are there, you may want to take in some of the park exhibits or walk one of the walking trails.

Coordination for this event will be primarily via email exchange. If you are interested in participating in the Tallgrass event on April 18th, please add your name to the signup list that will be available at the SFTARC breakfasts or send an email to Jim at This email address is being protected from spambots.
