Club member and former Ensor Park and Museum manager Larry Woodworth, W0HXS, was thrice honored the morning of Saturday, Oct. 24 when club Secretary-Treasurer Marty Peters, KE0PEZ, dropped by the Overland Park home Larry shares with his wife Pat bearing not one, not two, but three gifts.
Marty proceeded to give the man who was the "face" of EP&M for 17 memorable years a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Olathe, a framed Certificate of Appreciation from Mo-Kan Regional Council of Amateur Radio Organizations, Inc., and a D-104 Silver Eagle microphone trophy courtesy of MKRCARO.
The certificate from the city, which has owned and operated EP&M since 2006, was dated Oct. 15 and had been signed by Mayor John W. Bacon. It read as follows:
"Olathe, Kansas - Certificate of Appreciation presented to Larry Woodworth for going above and beyond to celebrate and preserve Olathe history through amateur radio and at the Ensor Museum and Farm (Ensor Park and Museum). Your contributions have made Olathe a better place!"
The other certificate likewise was dated Oct. 15 and had been signed by club President Jeff Darby, KS0JD, a member of the MKRCARO Awards Committee, and Bill Gery, KA2FNK, a member of the MKRCARO Board of Directors. It read as follows:
"In recognition of outstanding effort and meritorious service to the Amateur Radio Community in the Kansas City Region: Larry Woodworth, W0HXS Who has Advanced the Art and Science of Amateur Radio, and Brought Credit and Success to the Amateur Radio Community, to wit: For his extensive effort in his almost 20 years of service at the Ensor museum. During his tenure Larry was responsible for getting the museum listed on the national register of historic places. He was instrumental in ensuring that the Ensor Park and Museum would continue operation by engaging the city of Olathe to manage the site. Larry has passionately and ably communicated the history and contributions of the Ensor family to the amateur radio community and to the public. In Larry's own words 'You have to see it to believe it!'"
Marty, Jeff, club Vice President Larry Hall, KD0RIU, and fellow club members Joe Krout, KR0UT, Greg Wolfe, KI0KK, and Howard Cripe, N0AZ, all had a hand in the wording on the certificate.
That distinctive-looking D-104 Silver Eagle was mounted on a wooden base that had been turned on a lathe by David Albright, KE0DSV, a member of the Kansas City Blind Amateur Radio Club. The metal plate affixed to the front of the base read: "Mo-Kan Regional Council Of Amateur Radio Organizations, Inc. - In Recognition Of Outstanding Effort And Meritorious Service To The Amateur Radio Community In The Kansas City Region - Larry Woodworth, W0HXS - Who Has Advanced The Art And Science Of Amateur Radio, And Brought Credit And Success To The Amateur Radio Community - October 15, 2020."
The presentation of the gifts Larry received took place during a special Zoom "meeting" that enabled Randy Schulze, KD0HKD, chairman of the MKRCARO Board of Directors, to talk about the many contributions of W0HXS to the amateur radio community over the years in serving as the manager of EP&M.
In the photograph that accompanies this story, which was taken by Marty's wife Kyoko, Marty is pictured reading aloud the certificate from the City of Olathe as Larry, trophy in hand, listens.
