Council Grove operating event
Jim Andera described the plans for this event. See the article later in this newsletter for more details
Repeater issues
Jim Andera and Larry Hall reported on their meeting with Karen Sundquist, Property Manager of the Olathe Towers. They described the issues that need to be addressed in order for it to be possible to continue to house and operate the repeaters in the Olathe Towers. The repeaters must be removed from the elevator equipment room. They can possibly be housed in the "TV Room." A challenge will be to connect the radios to the antennas; moving the antennas would be problematic. New cabling would involve 50-100 feet, and it would need conduit and permits, etc.
Joe had a possibility for obtaining hard-line. Larry spoke about coax. Hardline is available commercially. Jim suggested that hardware costs could reach $1000. PE drawings may be needed. We will need to coordinate with the management of the Olathe Towers and possibly with officials from the City of Olathe.
Karen’s biggest concern was about insurance and liability. Another important issue is the security of the premises.
The repeaters are owned by the trustees. SFTARC owns antennas and provides insurance; gets free use of the repeaters. We need to find out about the emergency power that might be available at the towers.
Jeff cautioned about the possible expense and the limited resources of the club.
WW1USA POTA operating event
This event will be July 6, outdoors at WWI Memorial, sponsored by the WW1USA club. Sponsors have invited SFTARC to bring the club trailer. A tri-band beam will be provided by Joe Krout; use club’s vertical. Another group will put up a loop or wire antenna. There will be two or three stations on air; it is a “good time had by all” type of event. Liberty Memorial is qualified as POTA.
Field-day planning
Field Day plans are much the same as in past years. There will be a number of wire antennas. Set up will begin Friday early morning, with only a few people present because of the danger involved in placing the antennas. the City of Olathe must be notified about parking their vehicle out of the way on Friday. There will be a GOTA station, phone, CW, digital. The event will be either 2A or 3A. Larry will talk to Tony about food.
