President's Corner August - 2025

wb0cnk

SFTARC has sponsored some great events that have brought us together for outdoor activities this summer:  Tallgrass Preserve POTA and Ensorfest took place in May, and Field Day occurred in June where Army Reserve soldiers joined us.

I encourage you to join in on club camaraderie by attending these upcoming activities:

The Pony Express Festival at Hollensberg, KS, August 31st, https://www.facebook.com/hollenbergponyexpress/  which includes a historical telegraph demonstration put together by Jim-KØNK. The festival is a great way to learn more about the State of Kansas and telegraph history. Contact Jim-KØNK at jandera@embarqmail.com for additional information or to volunteer.

Our club is a key sponsor of the KS QSO Party taking place Saturday  & Sunday Aug 30 & 31st, event info at: https://www.ksqsoparty.org/.  To join in this air-conditioned event, and visit the elaborate installation at the Sawyer Antenna Facility (SAF), contact Marty KEØPEZ via the website contact tab.

Mark your calendars for some interesting Tech Nights Zoom calls coming up. On Aug 28th, Greg-KIØKK will present a program on AREDN Mesh. Greg is part of a technical group that has installed an elaborate MESH across the KC Metro area. Tech Night on September 25th will be a program on Kit Building Techniques for Success by Joe Eisenberg-KØNEB. Joe has authored the Construction Techniques Chapter of the Handbook, spoken at the Dayton Hamvention 32 times and was the Kit Building Editor for CQ Magazine since 2009. Log in to the web site and select the "Links/Zoom Links" menu to find Zoom meeting links or contact a club officer.

There are some excellent Hamfests approaching that club members usually attend. Huntsville, Aug 16th & 17th; Joplin, MO August 22nd and 23rd; Wichita, KS Oct 4; SPARK-CON, Sedalia, MO. Oct 10 & 11. Attend any of these events with other club members,

Meeting Notes - August 2025

MEETING TO ORDER:

President George, WBØCNK, called the meeting to order shortly after 8:00 AM CST on August 9, 2025. Attendees introduced themselves with name and call sign. There were a total of 22 members present, 18 members attending in person, 4 joining via Zoom and one guest.

SECRETARY-TREASURER REPORT:

Marty was absent; the Treasurer's report was given by George WBØCNK. He provided the current bank balance and an update on expenses and income. The club currently has 75 members and 39 club members who belong to the ARRL. Club members are encouraged to log into the website and check their ARRL status and update their contact information.

AGENDA ITEMS:

Tabled Motion From Last Meeting (501c3 Application): [George - WBØCNK]

From Treasurer: To Spend $600.00 & Proceed With Application for 501(c)(3) Tax Exemption. There was some discussion about changing the club's IRS status to 501(c)(3). The benefits include access to some free software. This includes a free Google account and Google hosting. The Google account includes Google Drive, and Google meets. The club could also apply for some grants only open to 501(c)(3) organizations. Based on comments made during the previous club meeting some businesses do give money to 501(c)(3) organizations. The risk is that the $600 application fee is not refundable. If we apply and the application is rejected we would not get back the $600. The motion passed. Mike, NØTU, made the motion and Greg, KIØKK, seconded the motion.

2026 SFTARC Ham Radio Classes [Jim – KØNK]

The club voted on holding the Extra ham radio class in 2026. The class would be held in the Salvation Army building. The class would be held in early 2026 starting in January. The club wanted to vote on this early so we could reserve the room at the Salvation Army. Mike made a motion to hold the classes and Greg seconded the motion.

Clothing and Badge Orders [Jason – KFØISL]

5 people have placed orders for clothing and/or badges. If you are interested reach out to Jason or one of the other club officers. The plan is to collect orders by September 1. The plan is to finish up the order form this week and send it out.

Pony Express Festival at Hollenberg, KS, Aug 31st, [Jim - KØNK]

The Pony Express event is on the weekend of August 31. The event is at Hollenberg Pony Express Festival. If you are interested in the Pony Express event contact Jim (KØNK) or a club officer. The Pony Express station will resemble an 1860s-style telegraph office and will likely participate in the Kansas QSO Party. Jim is looking for someone to assist with the operation, which is very much a meet-the-public event as it is one of the many life-in-early-America displays at the festival.

Recap of Successful 2025 Field Day [Mike-NØTU, Trig-KCØRPY]

The club operated as 3 alpha. The club earned 3,747 points. The club had stations between 6 meters and 80 meters.

Kansas QSO Party - Saturday & Sunday Aug 30 & 31st [Marty – KEØPEZ]

Upcoming events include Kansas QSO Party on August 30 and 31. We are planning to have the event out at the Sawyer Antenna Facility in Edgerton. Marty has reached out to some people who may be interested in participating in the Kansas QSO party. If you are interested, please reach out to Marty. Sign Up Sheet is on-line: Contact one of the organizers or a Club Officer

Warrensburg Hamfest [Jeff-KSØJD, Greg-KIØKK, Howard-NØAZ Others?]

This year the Warrensburg Hamfest was smaller. There was a roundabout way to get to the hamfest. Over all it was good. Some large items from Ensor were sold at the hamfest.

Repeater Update [Jim - KØNK]

All the club repeaters are on the air and set up in De Soto.

Tech Night Aug 28th [George - WBØCNK]

Greg KIØKK offered to present Aug 28th Tech Night on AREDN MESH.

Midwest Division Zoom Town Hall Meeting [George - WBØCNK]

A few people from our club attended the ARRL Midwest Division zoom town hall.

Club Officer Elections [George - WBØCNK]

Will be conducted at the regular Club Meeting November 9th. If you are interested in running for office please let a club officer know that you are interested. The club officers include President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and two board Members at Large.

Christmas Party [Jim – KØNK]

The plan is to hold a Christmas party this year. We have decided on a few dates for the event. First choice is December 13, Second is December 20. Then the back up dates are 12 and 19 of December.

Needed: Add'l Net Controls for SFTARC Weekly 2M Net [George – WBØCNK]

Woody would like some help with Net Control. So If you would like to be Net Control there is an opportunity. If interested please reach out to a club officer.

Huntsville Aug 21, 22nd, Wichita, Oct 4th, SparCon Sedalia (MidWest Div), Oct 10-11

Talked about moving the club meeting because of the Hamfests in Sedalia. The plan is to have the monthly meeting the first weekend of October.

ADJOURN:

Greg made the motion for adjournment, Jeff Seconded the motion. One Nay from KØDDS.
