The club had a very successful Field Day 2025, with  a surprising number of visitors that joined in on the fun this year.  A local Army Reserve Communications Unit visited to operate the GOTA Station, and experience how dynamic Field Day contacts can be. We enjoyed meeting the many Hams who visited from the surrounding area and have joined our club.

Coming up are several more events you can take part with club members: The Kansas QSO Party - Saturday & Sunday Aug 30 & 31st. https://www.ksqsoparty.org/   To join in on this air-conditioned event, contact an officer on the club website contact tab.

The Pony Express Festival at Hollensberg, KS, August 25th, https://www.facebook.com/hollenbergponyexpress/  includes a  historical telegraph demonstration put together by Jim, KØNK. To join in the celebration contact Jim at:jandera@embarqmail.com

Be sure to participate in the SFTARC Tech Night on July 31st and learn about the latest off the grid mesh radio technology. Jeff, KSØJD will present a program on MESHTASTIC  https://sftarc.org/index.php/calendar-jevent/eventdetail/147/-/tech-night-meshtastic-by-jeff-ksojd

MEETING TO ORDER:

President George, WBØCNK, called the meeting to order shortly after 8:00 AM CST on July 12, 2025. Attendees introduced themselves with name and call sign. There were a total of 24 members present, 20 members  attending in person and 4 joining via Zoom.

SECRETARY-TREASURER REPORT:

Marty gave an overview of the club finances. Club expenses included Field Day related expenses and website related expenses. Deposits included membership fees. The club currently has 74 members and 38 club members who belong to the ARRL. Club members are encouraged to log into the website and check their ARRL status and update their contact information. The club is considering applying for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. The cost is a one-time fee of $600. There was a motion to approve the club spending $600 on this application but the motion was tabled by George for next meeting. Marty has the application mostly completed.

AGENDA ITEMS:

Field Day Highlights & Review: [Larry-KDØRIU, Jim-KØNK ]

An overview of Field Day was given. The main issue that we ran into was the logs for the CW station were all messed up. The time in the logs was off. Next year we need to have clips to fasten tarps to protect the ham radios from rain and have back-up ham radios for field day. There was a plan to use a new radio for the 6M station, this did not work out well. Having back-up ham radios this past year was helpful. The number of contacts is still being sorted out.

Warrensburg Hamfest [George – WBØCNK]

There was a relatively large hamfest on July 19, 2025, at Warrensburg from 8 am to 12 noon. The is a plan was to carpool to the hamfest. Jeff had two tables reserved for the hamfest to sell off some ham radio equipment. There is construction near Warrensburg so make sure you understand the detours if you plan to attend. LarrysList contains a map with details.

Repeater Update [Jim - KØNK]

Jim gave a repeater update. The 440 repeater needed some repairs. Danny paid to fix the 440 repeater and asked if the club would be willing to pay him back for the repairs. The club voted to offer to pay for the repairs to the repeater. The motion passed. Rex made the motion and Jeff seconded the motion.

Tech Night July 31st [George - WBØCNK]

Jeff offered to give the Tech Night presentation in July on Meshtastic.

Midwest Division Zoom Town hall Meeting [George - WBØCNK]

On Wednesday, July 16, at 7:30pm CT the director Art, KØAIZ, and Vice Director Dave Propper, K2DP, will provide an update on matters of concern to the ham radio community including the Upcoming ARRL Board Meeting,

Bret Kuhns, WØVK, will discuss the 2025 Midwest Division Convention In Sedalia, MO, Oct 10th & 11th. There was discussion about moving our monthly business meeting in October to allow members to attend this event.

Members Who Would Enjoy a Visit or a Card

Mike Lane - KEØCIS At: Good Samaritan Olathe Medical Campus

OTHER BUSINESS:

There was discussion about polling club members to find out who would like to buy club shirts, hats, and badges. Jason will work on coordinating the first steps on this process. We will work on getting cost information about these items and see who is interested in buying one or more of these items.

Upcoming events include Kansas QSO Party on August 30 and 31. We are planning to have the event out at the Sawyer Antenna Facility in Edgerton. In addition, the Pony Express event is on the same weekend on August 31. The event is at Hollenberg Pony Express Festival. If you are interested in the Pony Express event contact Jim (KØNK) or a club officer. The Pony Express station will resemble an 1860s-style telegraph office and will likely participate in the Kansas QSO Party. Jim is looking for someone to assist with the operation, which is very much a meet-the-public event as it is one of the many life-in-early-America displays at the festival.

ADJOURN:

The meeting was adjourned shortly after 9 AM.

Solar Shines at Field Day Before Clouds Prevail

Solar StationHoward Cripe (N0AZ) mans his solar-powered digital station just inside the Peg Barn

Approaching showers forced members of the Santa Fe Trail Amateur Radio Club to begin the tear-down process a couple of hours early during Field Day 2025, but by then Howard Cripe, NØAZ, had already managed to rack up 20 important contacts - count 'em - using his solar-powered digital station located in the Peg Barn at Ensor Park and Museum in Olathe. Pictures from the event may be viewed in the Club Picture Album under the Field Day folder.

According to Field Day co-coordinator Jim Andera, KØNK, the presence of Howard's station enabled the club "to help fill in some operating gaps" Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29 while allowing it to receive credit from the American Radio Relay League for having made some solar-powered contacts.

Information compiled by Mike Stewart, NØTU, for Jim put the total number of contacts for the 24-hour event sponsored by the ARRL at 672. The three stations responsible for the club's 3A classification this year, a single-sideband station, a Morse code station and a digital station, collectively accounted for 632 of these contacts.

The SSB station was positioned on the front porch of the historic Ensor home where amateur radio pioneers Marshall Ensor, W9BSP, and his younger sister Loretta, W9UA, grew up, while the continuous wave (CW) station was set up just to the west of the two-story house.

Meanwhile, the conventional digital station, operating FT8/FT4, occupied the club trailer, which was parked at the south end of the parking lot relatively close to the driveway.

In addition to the SSB station, the CW station and the digital station, the club operated a six-meter station beyond the north end of the parking lot and a Get-On-The-Air station on the front porch just around the corner from the SSB station.

Between the SSB station, the CW station, the conventional and solar-powered digital stations, the six-meter station and the GOTA station, club hams "remained pretty active," Jim reported recently. In fact, he noted, more than one station was on the air "into the wee hours of the morning" on the 29th.

Jim also reported that hams across North America were "disappointed" that the ionosphere didn't support communication "very well" on frequencies above 21 megahertz (i.e., 15 meters). As a result, employing the club's call sign, KSØKS, club hams relied on 20 meters, 40 meters and, at night, 80 meters to do "the bulk of the work" in getting messages to or from other operators. That said, they still recorded some contacts on 15 meters.

According to Jim, some overnight rain and a morning gust of wind left the CW station "a bit wet" and sent its protective canopy "cartwheeling away," respectively.

But the 50-foot tower trailer for the six-meter station "performed well" when Field Day commenced at 1 p.m. on the 28th, as Larry Hall, KDØRIU, the vice president of the club, and Tom Apalenek, WA2IVD, had already put in the necessary effort to ensure that the tower could be raised and lowered "smoothly." The tower trailer was "pressed into service" by the club for the first time only a year ago.

Referring to visitors, Jim described the turnout for Field Day as "good" and said several hams showed up at Ensor Park and Museum and subsequently participated in the operation. He also said several non-hams dropped by to observe the activities in progress.

The latter group included five Army reservists from Belton, Missouri. They spent at least an hour at the site with the goal of "becoming more familiar with radio communications" in mind, and most of them even took full advantage of the opportunity to give the GOTA station a try.

Finally, Jim related that again this year there was a "great turnout" of club hams on the morning of Friday, June 27 and the morning of the 28th to assist with the time-consuming task of setting up the various radio stations and the antennas they require.
